The Americans - Season 4 Episode 08: The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears

Description
Season 4 begins with a series of powerful dramatic events. The season opens with Phillip, who is trying to get rid of the growing desperation of getting rid of those family tensions at Jennings' house, which are dangerously close when Paige talks about a secret. On the other hand, there is a new burden on which he tries to co-exist, which comes with the mystery of her family. There is a new development in William's work that makes Jennings insist on confronting multiple facts about this dangerous biological warfare.

"The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears" is fixated on the symbols and perceptions of Americanness - and consequently delivers the best episode of the season, one that re-centers the series at just the right moment.

[Elizabeth's] outburst [with Paige], similar to the dust-up with Philip, is rooted in a sense of betrayal, but here Elizabeth has the power to exert control.

Matthew Rhys makes his The Americans directing debut here... and it's tempting to attribute the episode's tonal wizardry to his work behind the camera.

The most harrowing scene came with Elizabeth's verbal assault of Paige.

The roller coaster ride that is literally every Americans episode was on a particularly severe course this week.

"The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears" is one of the best episodes The Americans has ever produced.

I thought the show did a great job in defying expectations while still delivering the goods dramatically, albeit in a more unexpected way.

Paige re-emerged as the greatest existential threat to the Jennings household.

It got ugly on The Americans last night. Literally. Their marriage pushed to its limits by the circumstances surrounding Martha's departure, Philip and Elizabeth Jennings' masks of suburban/Soviet sexiness slip, revealing something fearsome and repellent.

Fortunately, Matthew Rhys' first time behind the camera has paid off incredibly well, as we bring a number of plotlines to a head and take a significant step forward by the time the episode ends.
